ABOUT THE BOOK

This 2010 book takes readers on a journey into the living rooms, workplaces and hearts and souls of a transgender woman who lays roof tiles, a shopkeeper, a dairy farm worker and several other undocumented immigrants living in the Phoenix area in the late 2000s, when Arizona was in chaos with harsh immigration laws and a sheriff who hunted immigrants. It has been used as a textbook at Arizona State University, Duke University, Goucher College, Marshall University, University of Arizona and Northern Arizona University. It was the community read for South Central College in Minnesota.

The book was excerpted in The Village Voice, Rolling Stone, The Daily Beast, Phoenix New Times, Miami New Times, Westword and several other Village Voice Media newspapers.
